All about my city: St. John's

The prompt for today for Blog Everyday in July is your city. Since I love to boast about the city I'm from everyday, why not share it on the interwebs? Here we go!

I am from Newfoundland in Canada (the east coast of Canada), and the city I live in is St. John’s. It’s the capital of Newfoundland and there are approx. 150 000 people living here. Relatively small compared to other capital cities, but I love it all the same.

The city is the most easterly point in North America. It’s also the oldest English-founded city in North America.

(we also have lots of icebergs. you've seen the titanic right?)

Oh look, the oldest street in North America!

The weather here is awful from the months of January to mid-June. Legitimately we only have winter and then suddenly 25 degrees. Spring is not a thing in St. John’s.
St. John’s has some amazing views and hikes that make you enjoy living here when it’s not covered in fog or snow.

 Fog town:

Snow town:

St. John’s has a little street called George Street, which you may or may not have heard of. George Street has the most bars and pubs per square foot in North America. Which you know, means you are definitley in for a good time if you come by! With over 35 bars and pubs on two blocks you will find something you enjoy! And then you can enjoy some street meat at 3am.

St. John’s was also name one of the most colourful cities in the world and it’s due to a set of streets with brightly coloured houses we call JellyBean Row. They are such bright colours so that you could see them in the fog. I kid you not.

So there you have it. Well, that’s all I think you need to know about St. John’s anyway. The public transit may be awful, the weather might get you down a lot of the time but I dearly love this little city I call home. And should you ever find yourself in the neighbourhood, I would love to be your tour guide!

How to ruin your summer

Summer is supposed to be a time for play and fun right? So why am I doing this again?

Step 1:

Decide to apply to grad school. Research ALL the schools

Step 2:

Realize you need to write the GRE to get in.

Step 3:

Decide whatever you can do this! No sweat!

Step 4:

Get the book

and realize you don't understand any of this:

Step 5:

Cry and regret your decision

Ok ok, ruining my summer might be a bit of an exaggeration, but you catch my drift.

Happy Tuesday!

Finish the sentence

Well well well, monday. We meet again..

While I have most definitely not been posting every day in July, this theme seemed like too much fun to pass up. Plus I needed to get something posted because it's been a while you.

(Also, please excuse the little bits of blog everywhere as I'm currently getting my layout edited and YEAH. I'm really good at the internet).

Here we go! Sentence finishing:

When I open the fridge, I always hope I find...
Subway. infinite amounts of subway.

My favorite article of clothing is...
Any maxi dress i own. comfortable and acceptable at work and for play.

Last week I was really pissed when...
Whennn two of the houses I was supposed to go see were rented to someone else :( the saddest of times.

One thing nobody understands about me is...
Why I have so much difficulty sleeping. Or why my migraines make me want to kill someone. If they don't experience it, they just don't get it. Fair enough I guess.

One thing I don't understand is...
How people don't think them picking to spend all their time with their partner won't have a negative impact on your friendships. If you always tell me you're busy, I'm just not going to invite you anymore.

The world would be a better place if...
France and Newfoundland were the same place.

If I had a million dollars I'd...
Pay off debt, give some to charity and move to Europe. or move someone to Canada. whichever.

If I could change one thing about myself, it would be...
I have a really short temper at times. Need to get that on lock down.

Something that can always make me happy is...
French fries

Something I'll never blog about is...
not much I wouldn't blog about really

If I could go anywhere I would go...
Australia, Germany, Switzerland, just.. everywhere.

because...
there is so much more to see than just where I live!

If I were an animal I would be a....
sloth. They are basically my spirit animal anyway

A job I've always wanted is..
There isn't one job i've always wanted. it changes. Right now it's speech pathologist.

My idea of a perfect day is...
Sleeping till 11, getting lunch at my fave restaurant then lounging.

If I knew I'd die next week, this week I'd...
Eat everything. Quit my job and see as many places as I could.  Tell everyone every second of the day that I love them.

So that's all she wrote! Enjoy your monday!

Chapters stole my money

Well, they can't really be stealing my money since I'm voluntarily spending it but you catch my drift. Every time I walk into that store, I have the intention to buy ONE thing, maximum two. But I most definitely never leave with only one or two things.

On a recent venture, I was simply out to find some new books because, who doesn't love to sit down with a new book?! (Janet of three years ago certainly didn't). I did stumble across these, AND they are canadian so showing some love for my motherland:

I've heard great things about both.

So on my way to the checkout, I mosey through the stationary section of chapters, and stumble upon these totally adorable prints (among so many other ones and I would have bought them all if I had an unlimited income):

I can't wait to find a frame for these bad boys and put them in my room.

And then, I saw it. Something I had seen a few reviews about and wanted to check out myself because I am totally obsessed with planners of any kind:

The Kate Spade planner by Lifeguard Press. I couldn't resist. I opened the pages and this alone was enough for me to snatch it up:

not specifically that quote but the quotes that are there every month. I have been searching and searching for the perfect planner and I think I found it.

I just need it to be august so I can fill it with lots and lots of fun things!

That was my shopping adventure. I should probably steer clear of chapters for a while.

Let me tell you bout' my best friend

I'm no stranger to the insomnia world. Two years ago I was awake for 52 hours straight and hysterical. I was calling my mom at weird hours because the time difference until finally my landlord came down to my apartment and saved me with some ativan.

Luckily, it hasn't been that bad since, but if I do spend one night without sleep, I immediately go back into the feelings of anxiety and fear that I won't ever sleep again. This in turns makes going to bed a really daunting task. Being constantly afraid of a place that gives so much comfort is not my ideal situation.

This past sunday I was getting ready to hop in bed and pass OUT because I had been out every night since thursday and homegirl just cannot do that anymore. I felt like crap all weekend. Anyway, I laid down in bed, and closed my eyes. I didn't stop tossing and turning the ENTIRE night. 1am went by, then 3am then my alarm was going off.  So last night I did everything besides take my prescription sleeping pills to try and will myself to sleep.

I bought chamomile tea and Midnite sleep aid because I had heard so many good things about it. I popped one in and an hour and a half later, still awake. It was 1:30 at this point and I was in tears over being awake. That's when I realized I had exactly what I needed downstairs in the my cupboards.

I wasn't sick but I knew this was going to give me exactly what I wanted. My  very best friend who helps me out in times like this.

I know it's really not the best method to sleep but girl I needed the sleep as much as I need to stop eating Mcdonalds. Which I can guarantee you is really badly.

Anyway, 2 tablespoons later and I was off to dreamland. Sleep is definitely not overrated.

I hope you all had a lovely weekend!

Bipolar Weather

I don't know if it's in poor taste to talk about the weather on your blog (since it's a last resort topic in conversation) but IMMA DO IT ANYWAY.

Here in good ol' Newfoundland we experience weather unlike any other place I've been. It could seriously be like this one day:

and then the next morning you look out your window and BAM:

I really wish I was kidding.

The entire month of june was maximum 8 degrees and then SUDDENLY july hit and has been 24 degrees everyday since. I am not usually one to complain about the heat (like, at all. I am the person who loves getting in the car after the sun has been beating in on it all day and everything is hot to the touch) BUT THE HUMIDITY is a bit much.

The worst part about humidity? This:

but whatever. As humid as it may be and as sticky as I feel, it's friday, it's summer and I am going to damn well enjoy myself.

Happy weekend!

Happy birthday Canada!

Canada Day has been one of my favourite days for as long as I can remember. When I was little, it meant spending the day with my family then going to see the fireworks with my friend that night.

Nowadays, I see it was one of the few holidays I get during the summer and make the most of it. Well, I make the most of the night before because you know, having the day off and everything means you have to go out and have a few (or many) mugs of Rickards White (especially when they are the same price as a pint. I mean how can you not really. That would be sacrilegious).

What makes me the happiest about Canada Day is seeing everyone I know so proud to be sporting their red and white. I mean we have so much to be proud of, this great country we come from. Healthcare, education, music, arts etc. Everyone is generally in a great mood and wants to celebrate with you even if they have never laid eyes on you before.

I imagine this kind of thing happens in other countries as well on their national holidays, it’s really a cool thing.
My Canada day was spent dressed in red and white and going to the parliament building in my city to see some live music and eat delicious food (you can’t go wrong with hot dogs and diet pepsi am I right?). Then I hung out with my family for my aunt’s birthday and ended the day with some fireworks!

I hope you all enjoyed your Tuesday! Whether you celebrated Canada or not!
